Anuario Brasileiro do Cobre | Brazilian Copper Yearbook 2017

2017 Anuário Brasileiro do Cobre Brazilian Copper Yearbook 18 Copper use in energy efficiency and renewable energy T he International Copper Association (ICA) is the world leader organization in the promotion of copper, managed by professionals from various fields, bringing together all sectors interested in the production chain, from mining to industrialization, through refining and smelting. The organization has offices in five primary regions: Asia, Europe, Africa, Latin America and North America. Programs and initiatives are executed in nearly 60 countries. In Brazil since 1996 through Procobre – Instituto Brasileiro do Cobre, Mr. Glycon Garcia Junior, engineer, who is working in this sector over 12 years, is in charge of the office. Working on many actions, with political or commercial exemption with any sector, the organization focus on develop activities, which promote the use of this noble metal, as well as its advantages and contributions to humanity. Below, is an analysis of the work developed by ICA/Procobre: Regulatory Framework – We act on several working groups of technical standards and regulations to that defend the use of copper as photovoltaic systems, tubes (Legionella), copper products (CB44), electrical installations, high efficiency electric motors and transformers always focusing to demonstrate the superiority of copper compared to other materials and ensuring its use. Some examples of ICA/Procobre role in the development of relevant achievements: Law 11.337 of July 26, 2006, which establishes the obligation for buildings to have a grounding system and electrical installations compatible with the use of protective earth conductor; IT 41 - Normative instruction of the Fire Department of São Paulo to review the electrical installation conditions; Product standards and installation of solar heating systems; Standards for copper pipes use in gas installations; Standard of upsizing electric conductors (ABNT NBR 15920); Mandatory labeling program for distribution transformers; Development of ISO50001EnergyManagement standards at international and national level; Introduction of Asset Management in the electric sector with the development of the Brazilian version of the set of ISO 55000 standards; New ordinance 29 of January 26, 2017 establishingmandatory levels of premiumenergy efficiency for three-phase electric motors. Energy Management – ISO 50001 focus on the implementation of the Energy Management System and allows companies to adopt the best practices of energy management, with gain in performance, cost reduction by optimizing energy consumption and mitigating environmental impacts, such as emission of greenhouse gases. In Brazil, many companies are adopting energy management practices, and nowadays, there are more than 30 certified companies, as well as many other organizations interesting to adopt the standard, especially in the industrial sector. Procobre in partnership with Senai Pirituba and Eletrobrás created a program that encourages the implementation of energy management systems increasing nine new companies with the certification in Brazil. The project has the assistance of Senai in the implementation of standard requirements and development of energy planning, and Eletrobras supports the accomplishment of the internal audit, Developing actions to promote the use of copper, the role of ICA/Procobre is to highlight the advantages and main contributions of this metal for humanity ENERGIA ENERGY
