Anuario Brasileiro do Cobre | Brazilian Copper Yearbook 2018

Anuário Brasileiro do Cobre Brazilian Copper Yearbook 2018 25 governors, mainly in São Paulo, where we worked a lot about it. This project is related to the prevention of claims in public buildings; some of them seriously damaged by the lack of care with the electric part. Originally, we wanted to make a reevaluation in the buildings with more than 10 years, but we didn’t get this law approved. Then we expand the scope to 15 years, but the law was vetoed once again. The consequence of this lack of attention was the damage caused by disasters, as the ones in the Image and Sound Museum, the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro and even the Ipiranga Museum, that is being reformed and that needs a special attention to the electrical part of the construction. We are working hard on this aspect. There is always the excuse that “it’s not possible to spend money”, but look what is the ensuing consequence. The lost collections are irreplaceable.  What is Sindicel doing to meet the demand and the associates’ expectations? The major complaint that we had in the trade union was exactly the labor issue. They talked a lot about competitiveness, the “costs” of the labor actions. It was about this point that we took stronger actions. Our associates also complained about the Non-Conforming Materials, that is dangerous and against the law. Besides being a crime and an unfair competition, it´s a question of safety. We are acting a lot about it. The tax issue is also a complaint, because it is confused. We have worked hard on that too. A tax reform shall take place that won´t be sectorial; it will be a wide reform. We support all Fiesp and CNI initiatives in this area. We, as a metallurgical transformation sector, the Fiesp and the CNI, through the board of directors and with my participation.  Is there any forecast of investments in the sector? All work, or should work, under the logic of demand and supply. Nowadays, for example, demand is weak, what generate some idleness. I have been following, through Fiesp, the concern about the 4.0 company in order to keep the sector updated. However, to turn this into reality, it’s necessary to make sales, the demand, and the economy to work. If the economy is not working, I don’t know how we would have a cutting-edge industry. We have wealth here, but we can’t explore it by ourselves. In other words, we have things to do here, but we don’t have the resources to do them. It’s necessary to have clear rules about these issues to have a minimum security for the investor. Would anyone invest its money with risk, put it in a place that should give a long-term return even if the investor is not sure of the return or without knowing if he gets his money back? It’s necessary to work this image abroad to attract investments to Brazil.  What is the message to the copper industries? We have faced turbulence, and whenever we don’t see the things right in front of us, we feel insecure, and we don’t know where to go. However, there is one thing: the human being searches for the right direction. Democracy gives us the chance to various trends, but it takes a long time to settle down; although, with freedom, we will get there. The path is this one. This is called politics. Persuasion between the parties, relationship, it’s all that. There is no booklet. There is talk. This requires persuasion and work. The government is the people representative. Therefore, it has to lead the people to the best path.
