Anuario Brasileiro do Cobre | Brazilian Copper Yearbook 2022

Anuário Brasileiro do Cobre Brazilian Copper Yearbook 2022 11 Electric mobility is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world, either because of energy efficiency, innovative technology, or benefits. But even though we are evolving, it is a sensitive subject given our history as a country in energy transition. There are a lot of opportunities, but countless challenges. One significant fact is that sales of electric and hybrid vehicles in Brazil increased by 74% last year, according to data from the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association. These means of transport are important in containing carbonization and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but - in addition to sustainability - there are other benefits that electric vehicles can offer society. These range from reducing public health spending, to noise control in large cities. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that four million more people die prematurely worldwide because of air pollution every year. About 90% of the world’s population is exposed to pollutant concentrations above those recommended by the WHO. And that is serious. In metropolitan areas, emissions from cars, buses, trucks, and motorcycles are the main sources of pollution. The Sao Paulo State Environmental Company (CETESB) estimates that 299,000 tons of CO, 63,000 tons of COV (NMHC), 165,000 tons of NOx, 4,100 tons of MP, and 2,700 tons of SO2 - all toxic pollutants - were emitted into the atmosphere in 2018 Sao Paulo State. Considering that a large part of the population uses the national health system (SUS), how much would we save on public health with the adoption of electric vehicles in Sao Paulo State and - why not - in Brazil? These and other issues are pushing companies dependent on logistics services to move forward quickly in the electrification of their fleets. This is the case for iFood, for example, which recently launched the iFood Pedal Project, to get delivery workers to use electric bicycles. Amazon has begun using cars with sustainable engines for deliveries, as has DHL Supply Chain, which has 25 such vehicles in its fleet and intends to add that number in the coming years. Mercado Livre has 70 zero emission units in circulation. We can also mention Americanas and Magazine Luiza, two major retailers, who have adopted such solutions in their businesses. The fact that companies have recognized the benefits of electromobility and energy transition is no coincidence. Studies and analysis show that renewable solutions are necessary for the commercial evolution and preservation of the planet. This is one of the values of Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) that guides sustainable and transparency measures for organizations. The energy chains associated with the transport sector are not stagnant are they are beginning to affect markets in the world, achieving consolidation in developed countries, ensuring that demand is met, either for the prevention of climate change, or the good of business and sustainability. ESG is very useful when companies look for ways to minimize the impact on t6he environment, while seeking to maintain good management processes. And it’s not just companies that want to align with these issues - investors analyze social, environmental and governance practices before closing deals. This is fundamental to business and offers transparency. Aware of this disruptive shift, ABCobre and Sindicel last year launched the electric mobility group, which brings together companies and key players in the sector in discussions and strategies to boost new opportunities or eliminate barriers that may be obstacles to the growth of national industry. We need to identify the uncertainties that surround us and the outlook we will face. Certainly, decision makers will consider crucial information on the subject, and examples to be followed, to make coherent, rational choices. These will define what Brazil will be like in the future. For this to happen we must develop local industry and enable it to produce inputs for this macro system. The country cannot and must not miss this boat. You can’t miss the boat By Marisa Zampolli, CEO of MM Integrated Solutions, coordinator of the electric mobility working group, electrical engineer and electromobility specialist.
