TV program about wires and cables in Brazil With the support of Sindicel, the TV show ‘Fantástico’ returned to a subject it had reported on very successfully over 20 years ago and warned the public about the quality of different products sold in Brazil. The report was filmed in partnership with Inmetro. This report’s first episode addressed the quality of wires and cables in the Brazilian market. The report covered the consequences of poor electrical installations and, above all, the use of substandard wires and cables. We stress that Sindicel and Qualifio have been combating the illegal market in electrical wires and cables in Brazil, training inspection agencies and donating more than 70 items micrometers to inspect electrical wires and cables with. Added to this were operations carried out by inspection agencies throughout Brazil, supported by Sindicel and Qualifio, in more than 30 factories and 300 stores, resulting in the seizure of 172,000 rolls and 717 reels of non-compliant products, and the arrest of ten people in charge of the factories. Data from Abracopel’s Statistical Yearbook show an increase in fires caused by energy overloads, in turn, caused by overheating of poor-quality wires and cables. Notably, fire outbreaks have increased by 61% over the six years of data collection. Inmetro worked hard on collecting wires and cables in five Brazilian states: Amazonas, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Sergipe, and Pernambuco - and subsequently analyzing them at the Inmetro laboratory in Rio de Janeiro. The results of the analysis of 32 brands available in the market, showed that 14 do not comply with technical standards: Tekfios, Full Cabos, Tecnofios, Lig Cabos, Louzat, Euroflex, Voltprime, Conduprime, Condusprima, Condufast, Sam Flex, ATN, Luzzano, and Kotar Cable. All the substandard brands were notified. Only one responded by saying it would take the products off the market and provide training to comply with the standards. The president of Inmetro, Márcio André Oliveira Brito, says the institute has stepped up inspection and every company that fails to comply will be fined up to R$5 million.
