Anuario ABLA - 2014

63 Anuário Yearbook ABLA 2014 Brazil is really a country of stark contrasts. Although connected to the entire world, unabashedly embracing the most advanced trends in various segment and having an economy that is integrated with global performance, it still suffers from certain restrictions and prejudices that are difficult to understand and explain. One of these restrictions is directly connected to used vehicles, soldby large leasingand rental companies. Hardas it is to believe, but today you can hear the most incoherent arguments about the supposed dangers of buying a used vehicle from these companies. I have inmy years of experience heard it all, but none of these supposed obstacles can prove tome that this is not a good deal. And Iwill explainwhy. The term ‘semi-new’normallyapplies tovehiclesagedup to three years old. Our reports, since 2011, have shown, month on month, that the volume of sales of vehicles in this category has beengrowinga lot, evensurpassingsalesofbrandnowvehicles. Thisparticulateusedcar segment sawsales increaseby2.3% in 2012and4.7% in2013, and isso far upby11.8% in2014. Now, if this is a proven trend (not only in Brazil but worldwide), it is clear that buying a semi-new car is a good deal and the market has realized this. Buyers are after opportunities not only at dealers, but also from large rental and leasing companies. Their reasoning is simple and straightforward. Theyhave realized that acar rental or leasing company is focused on renting or leasing the cars and not on keeping them for long. To prevent heavy depreciation of their assets, they regularly offload them, which creates opportunities to buy used vehicles in good condition for a muchmoreattractiveprice. That’swhy thebig sales by rental and leasing companies have become highly attractive. Another great advantage that buyers have realized is that rental and leasing companies place a limit on the age of their vehicles, ranging from 12 to 16 months (at most). After this period, they will sell them - a reasonable number of vehicles in good conditionwith all the paperwork in order. Is it possible that all of these advantages mean nothing for a buyer when looking for a used vehicle? The guarantee of a vehicle’s origin is the biggest benefit a buyer can have to protect their interests. Brazilian buyers are overturning a lot of taboos or myths that had been imposed on them for decades, preventing them from buying what they wanted. This new class of buyers has realized that there is an unprecedented volume of used vehicles available. And this helps in when it comes to choosingand thepayment conditions, withmoreattractive prices that include several standard items consumers want, making used cars a better choice than brand new ones. It is no longer just a question of price. Why chooseused vehicles?
